Spring Commute

by Michelle

The air has a slight chill to it, just the way I like it. When I first get outside the sun is blindingly bright but my 15 min walk gives my eyes plenty of time to adjust. I don’t wear headphones. I like the buffet of languages and sounds I meet along the way. I hear English, Spanish, German, Russian and Arabic, while cars and early 90s r&b provide background music. I always make it to the platform just in time and hop on the train, hoping I’m not late to work, even though I usually am. If I am lucky I get a spot right next to the door, for the perfect viewing point. We rumble along above ground, finally get to the Williamsburg bridge and boom — there’s the city. Shining brilliantly in the sunlight. I take a deep breath and just take it all in. This is where I live now.
